“When Life Gives You Lemons…” Poetry Workshop – August 15, 2018

Presented at Lemonade Party:

Many years ago, a story is told
People arrived to these shores seeking streets paved with gold
Craving a life with comfort, a life filled with ease
Unaware of sweltering sweatshops in the factories

Those were the days America faced a recession
1929 was the year of the Great Depression
Lucrative jobs were scarce, hard to be acquired
Fortunate was the person to be hired

R’ Nissen Pilchik, ע”ה, was an ehrlicher Yid
Father of a family, with many mouths to feed
He worked at his job until Friday, the sun dipping low
Told his supervisor, “It is time – I must go”

Shabbos is coming, it is my holy day
To serve my Creator, to honor and pray”
Bellowed the boss, “These excuses, they make me tired-
Don’t come back on Monday, get out, you are fired.”

R’ Nissen accepted the pink slip with nary a sigh
His shoulders were straight, his head held high
Hashem will sustain us, Hashem will provide our need
שִׁוִּיתִי ה לְנֶגְדִּי תָמִיד

He sang, he was joyful the whole Shabbos through
Shabbas is a אוֹת between Hashem and the Jew
And so, this was repeated each Friday afternoon
With bitachon, with Simcha, he knew the Yeshuah would come soon.

R’ Nissen accepted those pink slips with nary a sigh
His shoulders were straight, his head held high
Hashem will sustain us, Hashem will provide our need
שִׁוִּיתִי ה לְנֶגְדִּי תָמִיד

One Erev Sukkos, his children were startled to see
R’ Nissen unfolding each pink slip lovingly
He pierced a hole through them, pulled through a string
Climbed a ladder, and started to sing

ושמחת בחגך והיית אך שמח
As he tenderly dangled all those pink slips from his schach
“My greatest Simchas Yom Tov, lies in this chain
Of Mesiras Nefesh and love to Hashem, again and again”

He kept Shabbos dear, though he wouldn’t get paid
He was presented with lemons, and he produced lemonade
Today ב”ה  his doros are staunch ehrlicher Chassidim
Generations of proud Torah true Yidden
